Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 where he enjoyed taking part in numerous card games when he was young. He discovered himself becoming very aggressive in these card games while competing against his father. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to place college on hold for a little while and relocated to New York City to play some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were tough as he would play countless hours and don’t win most times. He made some extra money by being an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he possibly could better his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He brought about an attempt to acquire more sleep and focus attention more on poker.

The definite improvement in his game began when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best players would frequently wager against each other. Howard had access into several of the foremost players in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would sharpen his cunning thinking techniques. He applied these strategic concepts to the game of No-Limit holdem.

He also helped his sister Annie Duke learn poker. Annie Duke was an excellent student of poker as she would always be asking questions about the right way to make the correct choice. Howard told Annie to head out to Sin City and compete in the WSOP tournaments. She is one of the strongest women players the poker arena ever. Howard Lederer relocated to Sin City in 1993 and competed in money games for the following 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
